About Nome Alaska

Iditarod Dog Sled Race

This Alaskan city is situated on the southern Seward Peninsula shore on the Bering Sea’s Norton Sound. The 2020 census had a population of 3,699, up from 3,598 in 2010. Nome was founded on April 9, 1901, and was formerly Alaska’s most populated city.

Nome is known for a significant health event in the early 1900s. During the winter of 1925, a lot of Alaska Natives in the Nome area got sick with diphtheria. Blizzard conditions hampered the delivery of a life-saving diphtheria antitoxin serum by plane from Anchorage over the whole area. To distribute the serum, a relay of dog sled teams was created. The Iditarod Dog Sled Race now follows the same path they did and concludes in Nome.
