The Ubly inclusive playground campaign is seeking $50,500 to help finish an accessible play area at Veterans Memorial Park in Huron County, with donations intended to pay for a poured-in-place rubber safety surface.

The Village of Ubly’s fundraising appeal and donation form identify the proposed area as west of the parking lot. The village says the improvements would help children using wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility devices play together.

The appeal asks businesses, community organizations and residents to indicate their donation amounts or have contributions available for collection by Friday, Oct. 30, 2026.

Ubly inclusive playground equipment awaits safety surface

Trustee Sara Schmidt told the Huron Daily Tribune in an Oct. 27 report that the village already owns a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, an adaptive swing set and a ball spinner. She identified the rubber surface as the most expensive remaining element and said she hoped the playground could open in spring.

The village’s own appeal describes the surface as a way to improve safety and access. It does not identify a selected contractor, an installation date or a final construction price.

The $50,500 is the stated fundraising goal. An updated donation tally was not located in the public sources reviewed, so that amount should not be read as an independently confirmed balance still needed on Oct. 30.

Spring 2027 is an opening goal

A Citizen Portal summary of the Sept. 3 council meeting says playground rubber matting was delayed until spring 2027. That secondary account is consistent with Schmidt’s hope for a spring opening, but a firm opening day and approved installation schedule remain unconfirmed.

The village’s public meeting-minutes index lists records through October 2026. The fundraising appeal itself does not promise a spring 2027 completion date.

How residents can support the project

The village’s donation form says checks should be payable to the Village of Ubly, with “Park” in the memo or comment area so the contribution can be directed to this project.

The form lists a drop box on the front door of village hall at 2241 Pierce St. and a mailing address of Village of Ubly, P.O. Box 216, Ubly, MI 48475. It also offers an option to request collection.

For questions or donation information, the appeal names Schmidt at 989-975-0588. The village says donors may be recognized on a community sign with their permission; the form also allows donors to remain anonymous.

Funding outcome still needs an update

As of the morning of Oct. 30, the donor-contact date had not passed. No post-deadline fundraising result could yet be verified. The stated contact date does not establish that donations stop afterward; residents should confirm current arrangements with the village.

The remaining funding balance, installation contract and opening day will need confirmation before the project can be reported as fully funded or ready to open.
