Wind Turbine Blades Recyclable – Since 2017 An Exciting New Technology Could Make It Possible

Wind Energy

ExxonMobil Chemical Company has acquired Materia, Inc. This is a California-based technological firm that pioneered the development of a Nobel Prize-winning process for producing a new class of materials. Novel materials have applications such as wind turbine blades, electric automobile components, sustainable construction, and anti-corrosive coatings. For example, this would make the potential for wind turbine blades recyclable after use.

Nobel Laureate Dr. Robert Grubbs and his Caltech research team discovered the technology in which Materia was founded in 1999. Its goal was to commercialize ruthenium catalyst technology developed by Dr. Robert Grubbs and his Caltech team.

A novel hydrocarbon-based material family with enhanced performance and sustainability. Materials may enable more resilient and efficient wind turbine blades during the energy shift.

Since 2017, ExxonMobil and Materia have collaborated on developing innovative hydrocarbon-based materials. These materials are stronger, lighter, and more durable than classic thermoset products such as epoxy. These benefits may allow for the construction of longer, more resilient wind turbine blades. Thus allowing for more efficient renewable electricity generation in the wind power sector. Because of their strength, the materials are utilized as a lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternative for steel in some construction applications.

“We’re reinventing how new hydrocarbon-based materials may serve as the foundation for many sectors to reach a more sustainable future,” said Karen McKee, president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company. “This purchase combines Materia’s Nobel Prize-winning technology with ExxonMobil’s complementing patented technology and world-class production capabilities to commercialize this intriguing new class of structural materials.”

The materials take advantage of novel catalyst discoveries by Dr. Robert Grubbs and his research team at the California Institute of Technology. Grubbs received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2005 for his discoveries.

“The combination of Materia’s inventive culture, devoted personnel, and cutting-edge technology with ExxonMobil’s expertise and scale in bringing new technologies to market will open an exciting new chapter for Materia,” stated Nobel Laureate and Materia co-founder Professor Robert Grubbs. “The acquisition by ExxonMobil greatly widens the potential prospects for this unique technology.”

The acquisition includes Materia’s headquarters and technology center in Pasadena, California, and its production facility in Huntsville, Texas. In addition, ExxonMobil intends to run the company as a wholly-owned subsidiary under the Materia brand.

About Materia

Materia was formed in 1999 to market a collection of ruthenium catalyst technology discovered by Nobel Laureate Robert Grubbs and his Caltech research group. In recent years, the business has concentrated on creating ProximaTM polymer. These polymers have found commercial success in subsea pipeline insulation, component molding for industrial applications, and composite applications such as composite rebar for concrete reinforcement.
